Here are the most important changes which serves to even the playing field. Basically each competitor must compete with the dog they use at work and not have the unfair advantage of using another officer's dog.

"A police dog shall be defined as a dog on regularly daily scheduled duty with the police organization of any unit of government, municipal, township, county, state or federal. The Police Service Dog may have been professionally trained but must be handled by the law enforcement officer to whom the dog is assigned to for deployment on a daily basis. Each handler is limited to competing with one (1) dog."

I have already had questions about crossed trained dogs. You may enter your dog into any event he/she has been trained in. I don't know if anyone works a bomb dog and a Patrol dog. If you do, and they both are your normal assigned dogs to work on duty, you may enter both dogs. Trainers are not permitted to enter the competition with dogs they do not personally deploy in a law enforcement capacity on a routine basis.

I know some of these changes will not be popular, but they are done in the name of fair competition.

Any questions or concerns please get with me. If I don't respond to a post within a day, email me at joseph.furman@fairfaxcounty.gov

100 Days until the Games. You Dog handlers out there grab your buddies and sign up for the K9 competitions. My name is Joe Furman and I am your sport Coordinator. I am here to help you with questions and concerns. For those of you who have already signed up, please make sure to review the rules. There was a glitch and the old rules never got updated. I do not want anyone to be surprised after getting here. I will be sending more postings with some of the major changes. So keep tuned.
