Velebit has long been recognized for its exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity. Within UNESCO’s programme (MA (MAB – Man and Biosphere ), the Velebit Mountain was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1978. Three years later the entire Velebit area was designated a nature park. Within it there are two national parks– the Paklenica National Park in the south (designated in 1949), and the Northern Velebit National Park in the north (designated half a century later).
Established in 1999, Northern Velebit is the youngest of eight national parks in Croatia. This part of the Velebit Mountain is a true patchwork of the most diverse habitats that are home to countless plant, fungus and animal species – a wealth that is yet to be explored in its entirety. It is this diversity of kart formations, wildlife and landscape, to a large extent created by man, which was the main reason for setting up the Northern Velebit National Park.
Northern Velebit National Park encompasses several areas protected earlier: Hajdučki i Rožanski Kukovi, strict reserve, the Visibaba botanical reserve – home to the endemic species Croatian sibirea, and the Zavižan-Balinovac-Velika kosa botanical reserve which houses the well-known Velebit Botanical Garden, which has been listed as a monument of landscape architecture.

You'll need a valid ticket to sail through the National Park.
The Kornati Islands is meteorologically located between two quite different areas: the northern Adriatic which is under the influence of Genua depressions in spring and autumn, and the southern Adriatic which is under a strong influence of the subtropical high pressure belt during the summer. Because of its comparatively small area and low elevation, the whole area of the Kornati has almost the same climate. Due to the scarcity of land vegetation, dew is usually abundant and somewhat replaces rain. According to the Köppen climate classification, the Kornati have the olive climate, Csa (moderately warm, with hot and dry summers, most of the rain falls in autumn).
The Kornati NP has 353 species of algae, 3 species of underwater flower plants as well as about 850 animal species – 61 species of corals, 177 species of molluscs, 127 species of bristle worms, 61 species of decapod crabs, 64 species of echinoderms and 185 species of fish.
There is a great number of species and habitats under the waters of the Kornati National Park that ensure a place for the Kornati in the European network of protected areas – the Natura 2000 network.

Untouched nature, the island's mysticism, olive groves, vineyards and rich forests are ideal places to research the rich flora and fauna, and to peacefully enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural surroundings.
It was already mentioned in the fourth century BC in Greek writing, and the numerous Greek amphora and shipwrecks along the coast of Mljet are evidence that Greek sailors stayed on the shores of Mljet during their journeys.
Mljet National Park makes up most of the island, and there are several villages, two salt water lakes - Veliko and Malo jezero, and a Benedictine monastery on the island of sv. Marija [St. Mary] . In Polače there are some of the best natural anchorages in the Adriatic.
Preserved from the Illyrian period, there are many fortifications and tombs, and the best preserved are those on the hill of Veliki Gradac, Veliko jezero and the fortress at Vodice, above the water source at Vodice at Babino Polje. The Roman Palace, which is the largest after Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the Arena in Pula, is a part of the valuable heritage of the island of Mljet.
