Just wondering, is there a "lessons learned" thread where we can pass on suggestions to the next Games organizers?
Well this is disappointing. I just got an email that my hockey shifts have been cancelled since they have too many volunteers and I'm being given the chance to volunteer elsewhere. I'm not impressed with the volunteer organization here. OK there are several thousand people to sort, but the last minute notices (if we even get notices) are a bit much. My first shift was to have been at 8am tomorrow and I just now get a "never mind" email?
I just got an email that more volunteers are needed for Flag Football, Baseball, Softball, and Tennis. Unfortunately I can't pick up more shifts for those sports; the days they have open are either ones I've already used for my assigned sport (Ice Hockey) or days I'm not available.
Interesting, Erica -- I suppose it depends on your role. Somebody else told me they changed her location because they really needed people at another location (I think she's a media aide). I'm a venue assistant and so far they've left me at the Ashburn Ice House. Still no email confirming shifts, and nothing has disappeared from my volunteer page, so I'm assuming all is well.

William, I'm anticipating losing the July 3 shift as well since there's currently no games scheduled that day for my venue.
Not yet for me. I signed up for 3 shifts at my venue since I'm available only on the weekends. I just checked and all my shifts are still there, as well as a bunch during the week. I'm waiting for the last one to disappear since there's no game scheduled that day.
I just re-read the handbook and there's a reference that exact shift checkin times will be emailed to us and posted by June 24. Given their adherence to email "we'll let you know by X date" announcements so far I doubt I'll see something today. I'll just show up for the shifts I selected on the website and see what happens.
Laura, have you tried logging into your volunteer account from the website? (and then click Volunteer on the left once logged in) I saw roles on my account page well before I got the official email.
Thanks Eric, you just saved me a trip to the Glen on Thursday. I've signed up for the 8am to 3pm shift on 3 days.
I may swing by on Thursday (since you're open until 9) -- just to resolve my question about July 3. I've signed up for a shift at the Ashburn Ice House on that day but there's no game scheduled. If I'm needed for cleanup/teardown that's fine but I don't want to go to the venue only to find out everything is shut down. Given the email system's operation, I'm not confident that I'd get an email saying "don't come"
I was looking at the schedule because I've been assigned as a volunteer venue assistant at the Ashburn Ice House. The system allowed me to sign up for a shift on July 3 but I don't see a game scheduled on that date. Is there an updated schedule somewhere?
This is very strange -- I signed up for shifts on June 27-28 and July 3 at the Ashburn Ice House as those were some of the open shifts according to my assignment. I just went to the event schedule and there's *no* ice hockey game scheduled for July 3 at Ashburn. Any thoughts on what's going on? I can't figure out if they have us scheduled in case the extra day is needed or if something else got goofed up.Volunteer Game Makers
Thanks Eileesh. I've seen the Volunteer link on my page but so far nothing there. I'm taking that to mean that they just haven't gotten to me yet. At least I know I'm in the right place.
I just got an email, but it was for being an athlete in the Police Pistol event. I registered as a volunteer, not an athlete -- and I didn't see an active link on my Volunteer login page to work at this event. Any thoughts on what happened?
There are several suite hotels in the area (Reston/Herndon) that have kitchenettes; you can save $$ by bringing in groceries. Candlewood Suites usually have good rates.
